Thank you for your interest in Brightworks!
We are accepting applications for students at all ages in rolling admissions through the summer. Please fill out an application and submit necessary materials, listed below, to be considered for the 2019/2020 school year. We will be in touch with you about your application as soon as it’s submitted.
Our typical admissions season looks a little like this:
Attend an Open House
Interested families should RSVP to one of our Brightworks Open Houses to find out more information about the school. Please click one of the following dates to rsvp for one of these Saturday open houses.
For prospective high school students:
Eighth grade students applying to high school and high schoolers looking to transfer are welcome to join us for a shadow day. Shadow dates will be posted in August.
Applicants of other ages will be contacted for a visit day after applications have been submitted; please see below for details.
If your family is committed to applying to Brightworks, please submit an application
We believe that the Brightworks application is an extremely important factor in our admission decision process, and understand that we ask for a great deal of parent effort to complete our lengthy application essay. We take your application very seriously, and consider it to be a critically important part of the process of discovering whether there is a good fit between Brightworks and your student, and Brightworks and your entire family. Given Brightworks’ unique approach to a child’s education, it is important that both the school and family applying have ample opportunity to explore ideas, questions, thoughts, and feelings, and our application serves as a springboard for those later conversations.
All applications, application fee, and supporting materials for the 2020/2021 school year are due in mid-January (exact deadline TBA; we follow the same schedule as other Bay Area private schools) for priority consideration. Every family is welcome to apply, and should contact us if the application fee presents a hardship for your family. Applications received after spots have been filled will be placed in our wait pool. Should a spot open during the year, we will reopen the enrollment process and consider wait pool applicants for placement at Brightworks.
Brightworks dedicated to providing tuition assistance to our families, and currently assists more than half of our families. While our available tuition assistance for the 2020/2021 school year will be limited, we encourage families who are experiencing financial hardship to fill out the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), which helps us assess families’ ability to pay for tuition.
We also encourage lower-income families applying to private school for the first time to apply for tuition funding through the BASIC fund. Please visit their website for more information.
Parent School Tours
Families who express a strong affinity to the Brightworks curriculum and who we feel would be positive additions to our founding family community will be invited to join us for a parent-only daytime conversation with the administrative staff. These conversations will be held during January and February. We feel strongly that we need to limit the amount of people in our space to honor the current students’ needs, as we have an open warehouse facility filled with small groups hard at work. Due to the distraction tours cause in our students day, we are not able to offer this kind of conversation to every Brightworks applicant.
Tours for interested families are only considered when all application materials have been submitted.
Family and Student Visits
After the parent conversation, student applicants may be invited to the school for a day visit to meet with staff and current students in order to get to know each other and explore the possibility of becoming members of the Brightworks community. Kindergarten applicants will be invited for a morning visit separate from the bustle of the school, in order to meet them in a more comfortable, age-appropriate environment.
Notification of Acceptance
Admissions decisions are made thoughtfully, based primarily on the family’s and school’s shared vision regarding educational approaches and practices. There is no preference given for the date your application is received, although we do give priority to siblings of current students. Notice of first round acceptances will be mailed out in mid-March, with contracts and deposits due by noon the following week. High school acceptances will be mailed mid-March on the same date as other SF high schools, with contracts and deposits due by noon the following week. Students to whom we are not able to offer admission will be placed in our wait pool upon request, in case there are fall, winter, or spring admissions openings.
